Two prominent scholars from Saudi Arabia who are also the heads of two world scale Muslim organizations called on President Mahinda Rajapaksa, this morning. Among those two was the President of the World Muslim Congress Prof. Dr. Omar Naseef.

By forming an alliance with UPFA: Problems of Muslim community can be resolved – Hassan Ali : Veteran parliamentarian, a moderate Muslim political leader and General Secretary of the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) M. T. Hassen Ali told the Sunday Observer that they are confident that the problems of the community can be resolved and political aspirations can be achieved under the UPFA administration.

Visa red tape for Muslim religious dignitaries cause for concern

A Ministry of Buddha Sasana & Religious Affairs request for letters from the Divisional Secretary of the area, in addition to the recommendation given by the Department of Muslim Religious & Cultural Affairs (MRCA), to extend/obtain residential visas for Muslim religious dignitaries, has raised concerns among the Muslim community.

Jammiyyathul Ulama urge to stop barbaric attack on Libya

No WP Muslim schools will be closed: Moulana

Western Province Governor Alavi Moulana said the government had no intention to close down any Muslim school in the Western Province. Once again Salman rushdie in Sri lanka !!

The Midnight’s Children, one of most Controversial writer Salman Rushdie’s novel was to be filmed once again in Sri Lanka However, has been put on hold for reasons unknown shooting has come to a halt before it shooting began.

In the late 1990s the BBC was planning to film a five-part miniseries of the novel with Rahul Bose in the lead, but due to pressure from the Muslim community in Sri Lanka, the filming permit was revoked and the project was cancelled. for the last two years is beeing in progress when indian film director Deepa Mehta picked up the project and Deepa Mehta and Salman Rushdie collaborating on the screenplay, indian actors Shriya Saran, Seema Biswas, Shabana Azmi, Nandita Das, Siddharth Naraya, Soha Ali Khan and Irrfan Khan, Shahana Goswami, are confirmed as participating in the film Read the rest of this entry »

Puttalam Muslims may not be able to vote, says EC

A large number of displaced Muslim voters in Puttlam could be denied their right to vote at the March 17 elections, officials said yesterday. “They might not be able to vote at the March 17 local government elections because of practical difficulties in transporting them to polling stations in their orgininal places of residence in the North on the day of polling,” officials said yesterday.

Jaffna  district  government agent  imelda sukumar  denied  the rumour  that Jaffna Muslim IDP must register before 31 of January  ‘ that is false propaganda   there is no such decision form the government ‘  she said when she discussed regarding Jaffna Muslims IDPs  resettlement  with Jaffna municipal  council member B.A.S. Sufiyan.

Muthaliph Farook took oaths as an MP filling the vacancy created by late SLMC MP Noordeen Mazoor. Farook polled the next highest preferential votes in the electoral list of Vanni district. Farook filled the vacancy created in Parliament with the demise of Noordeen Mashoor MP who contested the last parliamentary general Election under the UNP.The new Parliamentarian is a resident of Musali in the Mannar district.

Hakeem to meet polls chief to discuss Jaffna Muslim IDPs’ voting rights

SLMC leader and Minister of Justice Rauff Hakeem will meet the Commissioner of Elections to discuss on the voting rights of 27,000 Jaffna Muslims, now displaced and living in Puttalam, in view of the forthcoming local government and the Northern Provincial Council elections, Secretary General of the SLMC Hassan Ali said.

Puttalam Muslim Secretariat highlights Muslim refugee problem

The Secretariat of Displaced Muslims in Puttalam recently drew the attention of the relevant authorities to the plight of 27,000 displaced Muslims, who had been denied the right to exercise their franchise at the forthcoming local government polls. This involved those living in the area as well as those resettled in Jaffna, Mannar etc.

Happy New Hijri Year 1432

1432 AH- 7 December 2010 – The Islamic New Year 1432 H./2010 is expected to fall on December 7, 2010 , Islamic system  has a lunar based calendar with 354 days. The New Year date also changes every year as the Islamic Calendar is 11 days shorter than the solar calendar. Maal Hijra or Islamic New Year is celebrated on the first day of Muharram (first Islamic month). The word Muharram also means respect. It is more of a cultural event than a New Year celebration. People welcome the New Year with peace and prayers.

the beginnings and endings of which are determined by the sighting of the crescent moon. Years are counted since the Hijrah, which is when the Prophet Muhammad migrated from Mecca to Madinah (approximately July 622 A.D.) The Islamic New Year 1432 H./2010 is expected to fall on December 7, 2010.

Attorney Muthaliph Farook to fill vacancy in parliament

The name of Attorney-at-Law U.L. Muthaliph Farook who was polled next highest preferential votes in the electoral list of Vanni district will be appointed as an MP for Vanni district soon.

The nameof Mr.Farook will be Gazetted by the Commissioner of Elections to fill the vacancy created in Parliament with the demise of Noordeen Mashoor MP who contested the last parliamentary general Election under the UNP. The new Parliamentarian is a resident of Musali in the Mannaar district

Sri Lanka Muslim Congress Parliamentarian Noordeen Mashoor passed away in Colombo this morning due to a heart attack at a private hospital in Colombo. Mashoor represented the Vanni electoral district in the Sri Lankan Parliament between October 2000 and April 2004. then

He returned to Parliament in April 2010 also representing Vanni for the UNF and later crossed over to the Government when the SLMC headed by its leader Rauff Hakeem joined the Cabinet on Nov 22, 2010.

President has reiterated his commitment for the just struggle of the Palestinians

Iran to Build a fully equipped school for Muslim Students in Kurunegala

Sarah more disappointed her lawyer didn’t show up in court

Bahrain-based author on trial for blasphemy in Colombo have hit out after her case was adjourned again. Sarah Malanie Perera has been in custody for eight months after being arrested in Sri Lanka for the publication of a book, which described her conversion from Buddhism to Islam.

Sri lankan Muslim businessman murdered in UK

Sri Lanka-born Married father-of-three Mr Amar was found in the back of a white Mercedes Sprinter van on last Wednesday after police firearms officers pulled over the vehicle on the A30 in Sunningdale London . Hajj festival at the Muhammathiya Jumma Mosque in Jaffna

Mervyn removes cattle from Mosque premises, Def Sect intervenes

Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa last night intervened to prevent what could have been an ugly incident coinciding with the Hajj celebrations by the Muslims.

Deputy Minister Mervyn Silva accompanied by  the OIC of  the Kiribathgoda police station and stormed the Mosque premises at  Akbar town Hunupitiya, Wattala and removed as many as 30 cattle which was meant for slaughter for the Hajj keeping with the rituals,  according Riaz Sally – the President of the Islamic Solidarity Fund.
