Omar Mohammed The murder of the Puttalam police officer W.Navaratne Bandara by some unruly thugs was a much awaited opportunity for some racist individuals, contemptible media and petty politicians who used this opportunity and fanned the fires of racism.

The mainstream media showed off their un-professionalism by falsifying the actual incident and deliberately omitting key incidents. They misled the public to believe the actual culprits were the Muslim community not only in Puttalam but also in other areas such as Valachanai Irakkamam, Sammanthurai Pottuvil, Kinniya, Muthur and Kattankudy , Kalmunai.

But the Muslims showed unity and courage were philanthropic to the victims family amidst, intimidation and accusation. The entire Puttalam community participated in the sorrow by holding a day of silence with shops closed. White flags and banners was a common sight on the day of the funeral.

This incident has taught us many things one of which is that during a discussion it is always prudent our leaders discuss with other communities or those in power with the presence of foreign and local media. This will prevent those with racist agendas in taking undue advantage by twisting the truth. The presence of the media during a discussion will create transparency and stop the spread of wild rumors and racial tensions.

We Muslims are equipped with intellectuals, professionals and academics and most important of all the Quran and the Sunnah to guide us. So we need to look at things professionally and intellectual actions need to be taken. The old mind set should be readjusted to undertake an intellectual struggle and prevent others in power, walking all over us.

The All Ceylon Jamiyathul Ullama (ACJU) should under go a continuous improvement plan to lead the Muslim ummah into the new era to cope with today’s requirements and challenges. This development can be highly effective under the capable current leadership.

The current issue proved that we lacked in key areas we didn’t have a powerful pressure group country wide to speak in one voice when the mainstream media misreported the Incidents Island wide and attacked the Muslims.

So the ACJU should create a powerful pressure group consisting of all school of thoughts to speak in one voice when it comes to the ill treatment of Muslims. It should have the means of passing information to all Muslims in Sri Lanka through the Masjids efficiently and effectively

A strong legal team should be set up to take legal action against character defamation, unjustifiable accusations and against those providing baseless unethical news omitting crucial information in order to create racial tension.

A strong media unit representing the Muslims is of utmost importance to provide actual unbiased news so that other communities have both sides of the story rather than from rumors.

Without doubt all Muslims understand this necessity and would not only financially back the ACJU but morally and physical support it. This will be an opportunity to unite the Muslim intellectuals and the different schools of thought under a common cause. This will not only give Muslims the ability to create a positive PR but also help Sri Lanka reduce racial tension through transparency. The public will then have nothing to fear as they will have a sound understanding on every issue.

Most important of all it will create a strong united Muslim community that will respect the challenge undertaken by the ACJU and adhere to its leadership. This ACJU will be a mentor to our younger generation, educating them on how to face the challenges rather than resorting to violence due to frustrations on not knowing how to solve their problems.

  3. What we need is a transparent and thorough analysis of the Muslims'(racially Sonakar)responsibility in their state of affairs. Then we should educate ourselves how to enjoy our rights as everyone else and discharge our duties towards our motherland. We should drop the idea, which is imposed upon us by others to think that it is someone else country and its problem is someone else problem. Thus the current sort of xenophobia followed by the killing of the innocent police constable should not discourage us to move forward and cohesion.

Sri Lankans, specially Singhalese should see the Puttalam incident is an one off accidental cirme commited in the name of all Puttalam people by an unruly, uneducated and narrow minded thougs, but in fear of so called “Grease Yakka”. Law abiding Sri Lankans should not fall into the trap of racist medias’ hidden agenda. Duty of the medias is to help people understand the facts rightly and behave properly. And not scaremongering.

  4. We can have trust on media. Past experiences make us tired of them. The best solution is what Omar suggests. Insha’Allah
