No ethnic solution without including Muslims: Rauff

Minister of Justice Rauff Hakeem said non inclusion of the Muslim Community in seeking solutions to the ethnic problem would result in failure. The Minister expressed these views when he met a group of British diplomats including David Burton the chief of Political affairs of the British High Commission at his residence.

Explaining further the Minister said at a time when a 30-year war had ended it was most opportune to provide a solution acceptable to all communities. The Tamil National Alliance represents the aspirations of the majority of the Tamil people; similarly the Muslim Congress Party represents the interests of the Muslim community.

Therefore the Muslim congress too should be included in these discussions. With the formation of the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress the Muslim youth were deviated from taking up arms and any solution to this burning issue should be acceptable to all communities, he added.

The Indian Government was seriously concerned about the process of arriving at a political solution and India should also be aware of the issues facing the Muslims, the minister said.

He regretted the Muslim Congress was not afforded the opportunity of meeting the senior Indian Officials who arrived in Sri Lanka recently despite the discussions the Muslim Congress had with the Indian High Commissioner earlier.

He said he had participated in the discussions that were held between the Government and the LTTE and had gained much experience and feared that the ongoing discussions the government was having with the TNA would end in deadlock. –dailymirror
