Sri Lanka – Iran to enhance trade ties

Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi has told the visiting Sri Lankan Minister of Industry and Commerce Rishad Bathiudeen that Iran is ready to enhance ties with Sri Lanka in industrial and commercial fields.

Reports from Tehran said that the discussion included construction of cement factory, machine manufacturing, and building construction. The two Ministers also have discussed plans to establish a joint Business Counci which would support the activities of the private sectors of both coountries and bring their businessmen closer

Minister Bathiudeen has said that he expects more Iranian companies to take part in Sri Lanka’s development projects in future, and has appreciated the Iran’s support to Sri Lanka and expressed hope that such support would continue in the future.

The Minister has also met the Commerce Minister of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Dr. Mehdi Ghazanfari and held discussions on the commerce and trade between the two countries.

The Iranian Minister expressed hope that the annual trade value, which currently stands at $120 million, would reach $400 million.

Sri Lankan Ambassador in Iran Mr. M.M. Zuhair, has also participated in the talks between the Ministers. (niz)
