leave a comment »

The Parliament yesterday put off the vote on two Bills, Local Authorities (Special Provisions) and Local Government (Elections). The voting was to be taken on Tuesday.
Chief Government Whip Water Supply and Drainage Minister Dinesh Gunawardena told Parliament that the amendments relating to those Bills would be produced at the Committee Stage on another day and the Bills passed thereafter

At the time Minister Gunawardena made the announcement, Opposition MPs weren’t present in the Chamber. The Opposition walked out in protest against the Government’s refusal to summon a special meeting of party leaders to discuss the content of the two Bills

While the debate on the proposed Bills was on, Chief Opposition Whip John Amaratunga declared that the UNP, the DNA and the TNA had reservations about the provisions in those two Bills. He said that the Bills should be discussed further and a special party leaders’ meeting summoned in this regard.

The opposition lawmakers also charged that the Sinhala and Tamil translations of the Bills hadn’t been presented to the House.- The island -Saman Indrajith
