Arugam Bay fishing community vital for tourism development

Immediate measures should be taken to address the concerns of the fishing community of Arugam Bay who play a significant role in contributing towards the development of tourism in this world-renowned surfing destination, said M. H. A. Raheem, Chairman of the Arugam Bay Tourism Association (ABTA).

Since the beginning, Arugam Bay has been known as a fishing village and the fisheries sector has grown to be regarded as one of the major income generating industries of the area. Once again Salman rushdie in Sri lanka !!

The Midnight’s Children, one of most Controversial writer Salman Rushdie’s novel was to be filmed once again in Sri Lanka However, has been put on hold for reasons unknown shooting has come to a halt before it shooting began.

In the late 1990s the BBC was planning to film a five-part miniseries of the novel with Rahul Bose in the lead, but due to pressure from the Muslim community in Sri Lanka, the filming permit was revoked and the project was cancelled. for the last two years is beeing in progress when indian film director Deepa Mehta picked up the project and Deepa Mehta and Salman Rushdie collaborating on the screenplay, indian actors Shriya Saran, Seema Biswas, Shabana Azmi, Nandita Das, Siddharth Naraya, Soha Ali Khan and Irrfan Khan, Shahana Goswami, are confirmed as participating in the film Read the rest of this entry »

Economic development to overcome human rights issues – Shibly Aziz

Legal experts  expressed confidence that Sri Lanka’s achievement of economic development will overcome any human rights issues. While noting there are issues pertaining to human rights prevalent in the country however, Bar Association President Shibly Aziz PC said “we are trying to overcome this with economic development”.

MR, Gaddafi speak

President Mahinda Rajapakse in a telephone conversation today with Libyan Leader Maummar Al Gaddafi has requested him to restore peace in Libya soon as tensions continue to worsen in all the cities throughout Libya. According to the President’s office, President Rajapakse had also requested the Libyan Leader to protect civilian lives.

Arabic Language and Sri Lanka Muslims

It is hardly necessary to explain to Muslims in any country the importance and usefulness of the Arabic language to them. As far as the Muslims in Sri Lanka are concerned a little thought on this subject would show that the adoption of the Arabic language by them is of very great importance and may even go to the extent of saying that their future well being is intimately connected with the Arabic language.

The vast majority of the Muslims in Sri Lanka have been using the Tamil language as their home language. With the spread of English education, a number of families began to learn English. When Sinhala was made the official language after the Independence, many Muslim families not merely to make their children study in the Sinhala medium but also adopted Sinhala as their home language Read the rest of this entry »

Puttalam Muslims may not be able to vote, says EC

A large number of displaced Muslim voters in Puttlam could be denied their right to vote at the March 17 elections, officials said yesterday. “They might not be able to vote at the March 17 local government elections because of practical difficulties in transporting them to polling stations in their orgininal places of residence in the North on the day of polling,” officials said yesterday.

These voters have been displaced from areas like Jaffna, Mannar and Vavuniya for more than two decades now. Read the rest of this entry »

Seven Palestinians killed by Israel last month

Six Palestinian citizens were killed by the Israeli occupation forces (IOF) in the Gaza Strip and another one was killed by extremist Jewish settlers in occupied Jerusalem last month. Israel killed most of these citizens during artillery or aerial attacks on different Gaza areas and one was shot dead by settlers on Helil street in the holy city.

During last February, more than 203 Palestinians, including about 50 children were kidnapped by Israeli troops from villages and towns of the West Bank and Jerusalem. Read the rest of this entry »
