SLMC leader and Minister of Justice Rauff Hakeem will meet the Commissioner of Elections to discuss on the voting rights of 27,000 Jaffna Muslims, now displaced and living in Puttalam, in view of the forthcoming local government and the Northern Provincial Council elections, Secretary General of the SLMC Hassan Ali said.

Ali said that it had been decided to have talks with the Elections Commissioner following complaints by the displaced Muslims that there was uncertainty whether they would be allowed to exercise their franchise at the forthcoming polls. There were moves to divide their vote bank, Ali said

When the The Island contacted the Elections Secretariat, an official said Elections Commissioner Dayananda Dissanayake had gone on leave prior to retirement and Additional Commissioner of Elections (Parliament) Mahinda Deshapriya was acting for him.
Meanwhile, Grama Niladaris in Puttalam have advised the Muslims displaced from Jaffna in 1990 to get back to Jaffna and register themselves there for voting purposes.

Ali said the SLMC wanted at least a three-year period for these displaced Muslims to settle down in Jaffna. Franklin R Satyapalan
