Second-hand smoking ‘kills 600,000’

Second-hand tobacco smoke kills upwards of 600,000 people every year, nearly a third of them children, according to a global assessment in The Lancet, a British medical journal. – The findings, released on Friday in the first ever global study, indicate that unlike “lifestyle” diseases, which stem largely from individual choice, the victims of passive smoking pay the ultimate price for the health-wrecking behaviour of others, especially family members.

Among non-smokers worldwide, 40 per cent of children, 35 per cent of women and 33 percent of men were exposed to second-hand smoke in 2004, the most recent year for which data was available across the 192 countries examined. It is likely that the ruling United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA) will alter the two highly-debated Local Authorities electoral reforms bills, as a part of the compromise it reached with the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC), which joined the government ranks recently.

Indian External Affairs Minister S.M.Krishna arrived in Sri Lanka on a three day visit

Indian External Affairs Minister S.M.Krishna arrived in Sri Lanka on a three day visit on Thursday,  officials said. The Seventh Session of the India – Sri Lanka Joint Commission which is co-chaired by minister Krishna on behalf of India and his counterpart G.L. Peiris on behalf of Sri Lanka will take place during the visit,  a Foreign Ministry statement said in Colombo.

“This will provide the two countries an opportunity to review the growing ties between Sri Lanka and India; monitor implementation of bilateral understandings and further enhance the bilateral relations. Several bilateral agreements will also be signed during the visit”, the statement said.- news sundaytimes

An Islamic concept of social justice and social responsibility differs from the western notion of social welfare system in many perspectives. First of all, it has religious dimensions and religious connotations. It is a fundamental religious duty of rich and prosperous Muslims to help poor and needy in the society. Until rich Muslims fulfil these religious duties, their faith and iman will remain incomplete and they will be accountable in the day of judgement for their failure to help the needy and poor in the society. US investors are funding Arab property takeovers in Jerusalem

Turkish PM: We will continue to back Jerusalem and Gaza

BEIRUT, (PIC)– Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said during a visit to the Lebanese city of Akkar that if war broke out in the region the loser will not only be the region’s people, but Israeli citizens will share losses as well.

Erdogan, speaking before thousands in its neighboring state, called on Israel to quit acting provocatively, recant on its blunders, and apologize to the region’s people.
