President Mahinda Rajapaksa prevented the 2nd Gaza Strip created in the Eastern Province

President Mahinda Rajapaksa prevented creation of the second Gaza strip in Sri Lanka, in fulfilling the pledge to Eastern Province Muslims during the 2005 Presidential Election campaign.

Minister of Youth Affairs Mr. Dallus Alahapperuma, speaking at the Al Fazi Zaviya, in Kadeweediya, Matara at a religious function held to bless President Mahinda Rajapaksa on his second swearing-in said that the security forces and many politicians urged Mr. Mahinda Rajapaksa not to go to the Eastern Province and shirking he went to the Eastern Province on 12th October 2005 since he wanted to personally address the Muslim community

in the East and the only pledge given by him at these meetings was that he will not allow the Eastern Province Muslims to be squeezed. He said that it was when the terrorists attacked Muttur and denied water to farmers in Muttur that President Mahinda Rajapaksa took the resolute step to eliminate the terrorist entity.

The Minister further said that if the President did not take this resolute step, the second Gaza strip has become into existence in the Eastern Province of Sri Lanka. He said the Muslim community, especially those in the Eastern Province who were subjected to various kinds taxation by the terrorists should be grateful to President Mahinda Rajapakse for creating an atmosphere for them to live in peace and harmony.

Minister of Agriculture Mr. Mahinda Yapa Abeywardene, Parliamentarian Mr. Namal Rajapaksa, Southern Province Education Minister Mr. Chandima Rasaputra, Provincial Council members, Mr. Justin Galappatti, Mr. Kanchana Wijesekera participated at this function.(niz).-
