Private University for Sabaragamuwa gets Govt. okay

The government had approved the opening of a private university in the Sabaragamuwa Province, Chief Minister Maheepala Herath revealed during recent discussions he had with officials of the Sarvodaya Movement.

He said that stiff competition to enter local universities and the inability of the underprivileged students, from the Sabaragamuwa Province, to spend large sums of money on education in foreign universities, were the main reasons for the government’s decision to permit the setting up of a private university in the province

He said the aim of approving the opening of private universities was not to earn money but provide equal opportunities to all to pursue higher education. Failing to provide higher education to those who deserved it could bring about disastrous consequences, the Chief Minister told the delegation.

He said that medicine, engineering and information technology disciplines would be given priority in the proposed Sabaragamuwa University.
