Education Minister Susil Premjayantha on Wednesday (October 21) told Parliament that of 405 graduate teachers qualified to teach Advanced Level students studying in English medium, only eight had passed English as a subject at the GCE Advanced Level examination.

Responding to R. P. A. Ranaweera Pathirana, JVP member of Parliament, Premjayantha said of 76,370 graduate teachers only 405 had been qualified to teach Advanced Level English medium students.

He said that of 405 graduate teachers, only 252 had followed English in their degree programmes.

He said that of 4,200 students, who had sat for the G.C.E. Ordinary Level Examination in English medium last year, 3,700 were successful.

He said that retired teachers would be recruited on contract basis to teach in Advanced Level Arts and Commerce stream classes in the English medium. Applications would be called within the next two weeks, he said.
