Swine flu among Kandy schoolchildren

Children of several leading schools in Kandy town and suburbs have been infected with the H1N1 novel influenza virus (swine flu), tests by the Medical Research Institute have confirmed.

An awareness programme  for schoolchildren and teachers was conducted yesterday (Oct. 19) to prevent the outbreak from reaching epidemic proportions, chief medical officer of Kandy Dr. Asoka Senarath has told the media.

Provincial directress of health services Shanthi Samarasinghe said this viral disease was not fatal, but could worsen into pneumonia without proper medical care.
