Jaffna Muslims demand Deputy Mayorship

Muslims from Jaffna Municipal Council area have demanded that the Deputy Mayorship of the Jaffna MC to the Muslim. Four Muslims are elected from the All Ceylon Muslim Congress(ACMC) through the UPFA to the Jaffna MC. Additionally another Muslim MMC is elected from the Independent group. This is the first time 5 Muslim MMCs are elected to this Council. The ACMC has already made representation to the UPFA leaders to this effect, informed sources said.

Meanwhile, the EPDP, the other constituent Tamil party of the UPFA which secured 9 seats in the MC has named two of its MMCs as Mayor and Deputy Mayor. The Jaffna Muslims were forcibly expelled by the LTTE in October 1990. There was a Muslim Deputy Mayor in the Jaffna MC when the Muslims were expelled over night by the LTTE in 1990.

Incidentialy, son of this Muslim Deputy Mayor Mr. M. Ramees, Attorney at Law  who fled as a child refugee along with his parents is elected as one of the four UPFA MMC’s. He is tipped to become the Deputy Mayor, in the event the UPFA concedes to the request of its constituent party, ACMC.
